Program Trials

About The Programs

The FDP and SDP are a part of Basketball Australia’s Performance Pathway and follow curriculum that is supported by Basketball Australia, which utilizes innovative skill development practices and exposes athletes to contemporary basketball concepts. The FDP and SDP programs include weekly practices in their regions, a series of camps and the Tri-Series tournaments.

The programs aim to develop the best boys and girls in each region of our state and set them on a path to reach their dreams whether that is to represent their Country, play NBL1, College Basketball or play professionally. Our full-time Basketball Development Officers are invested in helping each athlete be the best they possibly can be, and there are many recent examples of athletes who have come through FDP and SDP and reached their dreams, including, but not limited to:

  • Nash Walker (Graduated Programming in 2024) – currently on scholarship at the NBA Global Academy. Recently selected to represent Australia at the U17 World Cup in Turkey.
  • Lucy Aherne (Graduated in 2024) – a squad member of the U17 Australian Sapphires Campaign in 2023 & 2024 and was a part of the team that won the U16 Asia Cup in Jordan in 2023.
  • Chloe Broomhall (Graduated in 2024) – one of over forty Tasmanian Athletes who are plying their trade in the NBL1 Competitions. Chloe ranked in the Top 5 in rebounds & assists per game at the 2024 U18 Nationals.
  • Jacob Furphy (Graduated in 2023) – member of Basketball Australia’s Team that won the prestigious 2024 Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Germany.
  • Kye Savage (Graduated in 2022) – recently signed 3 Year Contract with Brisbane Bullets. Completed his scholarship at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence this year.
  • Micah Simpson (Graduated 2019), Taran Armstrong (Graduated 2019), Jacob Richards (Graduated 2018), Sharna Thompson (Graduated 2017), and Taylor Mole (Graduated 2016) – all of whom were on NBL and WNBL Rosters for the 2023/24 season.
  • Lachlan Brewer (Graduated 2022), Rubi Gray (Graduated 2022), Luke Brown (Graduated 2021), Charli Kay (Graduated 2021), Sejr Deans (Graduated 2020), Makala Bingley (Graduated 2020), Emerson Wells (Graduated 2020), Sharn Hayward (Graduated 2019), Aishah Anis (Graduated 2019), Reyne Smith (Graduated 2019), and Taya Stevenson (Graduated 2018) – all of whom have been in the USA on scholarship to play College Basketball.

For athletes who trial for FDP and SDP and are not selected, we will be offering them a spot in the Emerging Program, which was established last year and provides more athletes with exposure to high level coaching and practice sessions. The aim being that these extra practice sessions will help bridge the gap with those who are in FDP/SDP and set them up for future success. This program will follow a curriculum that is closely aligned to FDP/SDP. Athletes in the Emerging Program will receive their schedule and invitation at a later date, but it will include semi-regular (i.e., once a month) practices sessions and the potential to take part in a whole of state camp.

About The Coaches

Basketball Tasmania has a full-time Basketball Development Manager and two full-time Basketball Development Officers who deliver the FDP and SDP Programs and oversee the delivery of the Emerging Program.

These coaches are Nationally recognized, with all 3 of them being accredited as Basketball Australia Performance Level Coaches. They all have recent experience with National Programs with Nic Martin currently on staff with the U17 Australian Sapphires Team, while Hayden Zasadny and Daniel Jenson attended the 2024 Basketball Australia National Performance Camp.

In addition to this, they have all worked in elite programs; Nic Martin served as a Development Coach for the Cairns Taipans from 2013-2017, Hayden Zasadny was an Assistant Coach to the WNBL Championship-Winning Townsville Fire in 2023, and Daniel Jenson has recently moved to Tasmania after serving a temporary contract as Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence Women’s Assistant Coach.

There will be two trials held and athletes are asked to attend both. If athletes are unable to attend a trial or wish to register an apology, they should email the relevant Basketball Tasmania Development Officer:

South – Nic Martin – nic.martin@basketballtas.com.au

North – Daniel Jenson – daniel.jenson@basketballtas.com.au

North West – Hayden Zasadny – hayden.zasadny@basketballtas.com.au

About The Trials

Basketball Tasmania is conducting open trials for the Future Development Program and State Development Program. Programming ages for the 2024/25 cycle are:

  • FDP U12s: Bottom age year of birth 2015 – Top age year of birth 2014
  • FDP U14s: Bottom age year of birth 2013 – Top age year of birth 2012
  • SDP U16s: Bottom age year of birth 2011 – Top age year of birth 2010
  • SDP U18s: Bottom age year of birth 2009 – Top age year of birth 2008

Players are asked to please bring a named basketball, a named drink bottle and wear a reversible basketball singlet and basketball shorts of any colour. Where possible, we would like athletes to not wear any FDP/SDP gear or singlets from third party providers for the trials. This is to help ensure that everyone is seen on a level playing field and avoid the perception of an advantage being given to anyone who has participated in programs before. We would encourage athletes to wear their club practice uniform where possible (i.e., if it is reversible).

There is $15 cost which covers both trials. Players must register prior to attending the trial – Register here.
