As we head into the finals of the Tasmania JackJumpers Junior League (TJJJL), Basketball Tasmania would like to thank the parents, carers, coaches, and supporters who help create such a vibrant and supportive atmosphere for our athletes.
Basketball is more than just a game — it’s a space where young people develop skills, confidence, friendships, and resilience. The encouragement and support provided from the sidelines, benches, and stands play a vital role in shaping that experience.
That’s why we want to take this moment to remind everyone of the behaviours and boundaries that keep our game safe, respectful, and enjoyable for all.
TJJJL follows the Basketball Tasmania Codes of Conduct and the Child Safeguarding Code of Conduct, built on these core principles:
-
Act within the rules and spirit of the game
-
Show respect and courtesy to everyone involved, free from discrimination or harassment
-
Prioritise the safety and wellbeing of all participants
-
Encourage and support inclusive participation at every level
Expectations for Spectators
Spectators bring energy and atmosphere to every game. To ensure it remains positive, we ask all supporters to:
-
Promote positivity and enjoyment: Applaud good performances and encourage all players
-
Respect referees and officials: Accept decisions with grace — abuse or criticism will not be tolerated
-
Support without harm: Cheer positively but avoid coaching from the stands
-
Uphold respect and fairness: Display appropriate behaviour at all times, win or lose
Expectations for Coaches and Team Officials
Coaches and team officials are leaders within our game. We expect them to:
-
Lead by example: Remain professional, communicate positively, and show gratitude to officials
-
Foster a positive environment: Create an inclusive space that prioritises player enjoyment and development
-
Promote learning and respect: Provide constructive feedback, avoid ridicule, and help athletes learn from mistakes
-
Model sportsmanship: Encourage fair play, respect for opponents, and humility in both victory and defeat
Expectations for Players
Players represent not only themselves, but also their club and Basketball Tasmania. We expect them to:
-
Follow rules and respect officials: Adhere to competition rules and accept referee decisions respectfully
-
Show zero tolerance for abuse: Treat everyone with respect — abusive behaviour will not be tolerated
-
Represent with integrity: Demonstrate good behaviour, teamwork, and sportsmanship
-
Respect and cooperate with others: Support teammates, follow directions, and respect everyone’s rights and values
Breaches of Conduct
The TJJJL competition is sanctioned by Basketball Tasmania and operates under official bylaws and policies. If behaviour falls short of expectations, it may result in:
-
A friendly reminder or conversation with a BTas representative
-
A formal warning
-
Escalation through disciplinary procedures, if required.
Emotions often run high in sport — but how we handle those moments is what shapes the experience for our athletes. These standards are not just about compliance; they ensure every child, referee, volunteer, and supporter feels safe and respected in our basketball community.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support our athletes and uphold these values.
We wish all players and coaches the very best for the remainder of the competition.
