The Launceston Classic is Tasmania’s largest junior basketball event. Held on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, the 2021 event featured 254 games and was conducted over 11 courts from Launceston to Deloraine.

One of the focuses for Basketball Tasmania in the current Strategic Plan is “increased participation by women and girls in basketball programs”. The event featured 46 young girl’s teams in the Under 14 and below divisions.

BTAS CEO Chris McCoy, stated: “After losing this event and others in 2020 it is very pleasing to see it bounce back so quickly. We resurrected this event in 2016 with 64 teams competing and it is pleasing to see this being close to double in the five years. It is really an enjoyable weekend on the Tasmanian basketball calendar”.

The Launceston Classic was great event for all involved. This year we had some extremely close competition with several finals’ games coming down to one possession. The competition demonstrated the level of basketball in the state that is increasing every year.

For the U10 teams, this is their first taste of competition from around the state. With the U12-U18s, displaying their skills and knowledge learnt from their clubs/association over the years. The 2021 Launceston Classic was a great weekend of basketball and socialising.

The Launceston Classic 2022 will again be held Launceston, on the June long weekend. With the success of 2021, we hope to see an increase in teams, as well as an increase of junior girls’ teams around the state.
