Basketball Tasmania is launching a new initiative to develop identified coaches and provide ongoing professional development opportunities.


The Basketball Tasmania Coach Acceleration Initiative has been devised to provide identified coaches throughout Tasmania with additional professional development, training, and mentoring opportunities.

The one-year program will focus on developing coaches and building depth in the Tasmanian system.

The program will be coordinated by Basketball Tasmania’s State Head Coach -  Mark Radford, and Basketball Development Officers (BDO’s) - Nathan Brereton and Nic Martin and will include input and leadership from industry professionals. 

Coaches in the program will also receive a series of formal qualifications, including –

  • Basketball Australia Association Coach accreditation

  • Basketball Australia Coach Developer accreditation


Who is the program for? –

To be eligible for the program, applicants must have a Working with Vulnerable People Registration and meet at least TWO of the following criteria –

  • Currently coaching in the State Development Program or Future Development Program as a network coach

  • Coaching experience at Junior Representative Level

  • Coaching experience at Senior Level

  • Current Basketball Australia Club Coach accreditation

Program structure –

The program will commence in February 2021 and the draft schedule will include –

February 2021

  • Online induction webinar

  • Individual meeting with regional BDO to devise Individual Development Plan

March 2021

  • Attendance at Basketball Tasmania’s High-Performance Camp, which will include the Association Coach Accreditation Course. This is scheduled for the 6th and 7th March.

April-June 2021

  • Mentoring session from BDO

  • Attendance at State Team Camp and/or FDP/SDP Camps

  • Review of team practice session and/or game

  • Online Fastdraw webinar

July-September 2021

  • Association Course Assessment due 6 July

  • Present at Coach Huddle in Region

  • Mentoring session from elite national coaches

October-December 2021

  • X’s and O’s Article due 1 October  

  • Attend State-wide League and observe High Performance Teams

  • Attendance at elite team practice


Application and selection process –

  • Expressions of Interest will be called in December 2020 and promoted through the Basketball Tasmania website and network

  • Candidates will be required to submit a written application, including cover letter and a coaching resume of no more than 2 pages

  • All Expressions of Interest will be considered by the review and selection committee, which will consist of –

    • Basketball Tasmania Basketball Development Manager

    • Basketball Tasmania Basketball Development Officer – South

    • Basketball Tasmania Basketball Development Officer – North

    • Independent panel member

  • Expressions of Interest close Monday 25 January 2021 

  • A limited number of coaches will be accepted into the program and the intention is to have representation from across the state



Program cost –

The Tasmania Coach Acceleration Initiative will cost successful applicants $400 ($340 goes directly towards the Association Coach Accreditation). Also covered in the cost is a coaching pack, administration time, and delivery from presenters.

Accommodation and travel costs for participants are excluded in price.   

Successful applicants will be invoiced once the selections have been finalised.
